Do you know where this is?
It is Windsor Terrace, a little area of big houses on 8th Ave and the east side of 9th Avenue between Lawton and Moraga.
This is looking up 8th Ave:
Here's a link to the only historical photo I found (coincidentally a person was asking about this topic on the Western Neighborhood Project site). It is the same spot and dated 1914, you can see a shadow of the brick "gate" at the bottom left.
I always admired this enormous house at 8th and Lawton.
I haven't been able to find any further information about the development.

Windsor Terrace! I walk up 9th on the "Terrace Side" between Lawton and Moraga every day after getting off the bus. There are no driveways, just steps from front doors to the sidewalk to the street. Some are pretty elaborate brick staircases. Those houses have the best candy on Halloween too!
Okay, I'm putting this in the comments so maybe no-one but angie will see.
I have an aversion to that side of the street. Why? Because as a little girl that was my route up from the bus I took home from school (unless a 6 came by and I hopped on for a block), and one day some little boys threw snails at me.
At least I thought they did. They probably didn't. But, I was terrified by snails. Yes, we are talking 30 years ago.
Oh no! Flying snails!
Hey - just a note that my boyfriend in high school lived in Windsor Terrace (his parents still live there) on the West side at the very top of the hill :)

oh, and after reading the other comment, just a note that all the driveways & garages are on the backs of the houses - there is an alley that runs behind the whole block :) I should know, I snuck in to a garage all the time via that alley :) - J.

Hang a stick of butter and cloves of garlic around your neck, and you will never fear snails again. This will however, make you irresistible to the French.
